Study shows simple exercise regime beats fitness trackers

In a recent study, it was shown that doing three brisk 10-minute walks a day resulted in higher fitness levels than trying to do 10,000 steps a day with a fitness tracker.

Many people are using fitness trackers with devices costing in the region of €50 to €200. People try to get to a certain amount of daily steps in an effort to get fit.

A recent study though said that three brisk walks per day took less time to do and produced better results.

Calendar passes 600k pageviews

I just noticed this morning that the race calendar on the Running in Cork blog has just passed 600,000 page views! There is a copy of this kept on the Running in Munster blog and that's up to almost 274,000.

It started off many moons ago as a 'Cork only' race calendar but it soon became obvious that this was of little benefit. People in east Cork are interested in Waterford races, north Cork runners want to know about Limerick events and so on.

It now covers races roughly south of a line stretching from the the north of Clare to the north of Wexford taking in all the Munster counties as well as Kilkenny, Carlow and Wexford. This allows runners in Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Waterford a way of keeping track of events in their own and adjoining counties.

I need to spend a bit of time on it though as a good few races have popped up since my last major update. As always, the calendar is at

Togher 5k voted best 5k in Cork in 2017

The polls for the best 5k race in Cork in 2017 closed  recently and thanks to everyone who took the time to vote. The Togher AC 5k race at Christmas got almost 40% of the vote and came out on top again after winning in 2016 as well.

The Bweeng 5k race finished 2nd while the Conna 5k race which is a real community affair finished 3rd.

Togher AC have grown their 5k race from scratch and the numbers have grown over the years. It has now overtaken the Belgooly race to become the most popular race in Cork over the festive period.

This is the third year of this 4 mile race and it's organised by Killeagh Community Healthy Clubs Project in association with Youghal AC. It will be held this year on Thursday the 24th of May 2018 at 8pm.

Considering that Killeagh is on the N25 Cork-Waterford road, the race should have a pretty big catchment area.

As you can see from the course map below, the race takes in a loop to the west of Killeagh. The race finishes at the entrance to the Killeagh GAA grounds which is the race HQ. There will also be changing and shower facilities here.

Note from the organisers.....The race HQ is in Killeagh GAA complex, where we will have registration on the morning of race. The big race next weekend is the 5 mile road race organised by Eagle AC in Carrigaline on Sunday, the 18th of February 2018 at 11am.

Please note that there is a change of route this year. The road north from Coolmore Cross is closed due to ongoing works.

The new course has been accurately measured by Kevin Cummins of the Cork BHAA so it's an accurate 5 miles.

While you can enter on the day of the race, you can also pre-enter from via the link below.

The annual Great Railway Run from Cork to Carrigaline will be held this year on Sunday the 22nd of April 2018 .There is a choice of two distances.......a 25 km race starting at 9:30am from Cork City to Carrigaline and a 10 km race from Monkstown to Carrigaline starting at 11am.

The run will roughly follow the route of the old Cork, Blackrock and Passage Railway which ran from 1850 until 1932.

For a large part of the run, the route will follow the old railway line that skirts the shores of Cork Harbour. The big change this year is the finish. An extra section will be added in after Shanbally so that the race finishes at the Carrigaline Youth Centre.

The entry fees are as follows...

Adare 10k in Co.Limerick Closed...

Entries for the Adare 10k in Co.Limerick on Sunday the 25th of February closed back on the 20th of January. A total of 900 places were filled and the organsers tell me that quite a few are from Co.Cork.

Here is a statement from the organisers...

Following unprecedented demand, our Adare 10k race sold out online on January 20th. We have been inundated with requests for entries since then. As a result of our latest meeting between our race committee and health and safety officers we will not be accepting any registrations on the weekend of the race for runners or walkers. While we appreciate that some people will be disappointed, we have the safety of 900 people to think of.

There will be no entries taken in Adare on the Saturday or Sunday of race weekend.

Our fully finalised participant list will be sent off next week to ensure each runner has their name on their chip timed bib. We will continue to update our page with number collection and other race details.

Thank you to all who have entered and we look forward to seeing you soon....Adare10k organising committee

Three new bridges planned for Cork City

It was announced recently that there are plans for three new bridges to cross the River Lee in Cork City. Once all shipping operations have been moved down to Ringaskiddy, the planned bridges will be part of the docklands development.

The Mill Street Bridge will allow better access from Centre Park Road to the railway station. Water Street Bridge will provide similar access but further downstream.

From a runners point of view, the one that will make the biggest difference is likely to be the Eastern Gateway Bridge near Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

This will connect the Centre Park Road to the area near the skew bridge on the Lower Road. As well as giving motorists and cyclists more options to cross the River Lee, it will also allow runners in Tivoli and Mayfield direct access to the Marina and the walkways in Mahon and Blackrock.

All of this needs to be finalised though and may well change. Considering the scope of the overall project, I suspect that the Eastern Gateway Bridge will be the priority.

French sports retailer Decathlon to open 9 stores in Ireland

It was announced recently that the French sports retailer Decathlon is planning to open 9 stores in Ireland including Dublin, Cork and Galway.

Decathlon are huge in France and sell sports gear usually at cheaper prices than the usual high street sports stores. They tend to be located on the edge of towns where rental prices are cheaper rather than say in town centres.

Joining an already crowded market, their arrival is bound to have an impact on existing sports stores in Ireland, especially the more generic ones which don't specialise in particular sports.

Decathlon has some 1,350 stores in 40 countries and they expect to open their first Irish store in 2019. The plan is to open their first store in Dublin followed by Cork and Galway. I presume 2020 may well be the earliest that we will see a store in Cork.

Looking ahead to the 2018 Dungarvan 10 mile road race...Sun 4th Feb 2018

The big race in Munster this weekend of course is the Dungarvan 10 mile road race and there are well over 1000 runners from Cork making the journey. This sold out months ago and the entry list can be seen HERE

Update Sun 4th Feb 9am : As of 9am, there is bright sunshine in Dungarvan. As the satellite photo shows below, there is a weak front over Wexford and this will move slowly west towards Dungarvan. This may result in cloudy conditions for the race but the big question is will it produce any rain? If it does, it's likely to be light and patchy. Overall, still looking good for the race.

First off, the weather forecast. The chart above says it all really. A high pressure system in the North Atlantic will dominate the weather over Ireland for the weekend. Once a weather front passes over the country on Friday night and Saturday morning, the winds should begin to ease and the weather will become more settled.

For the race on Sunday, it's likely to be dry with some sunshine although there is a possibility of some light rain from a passing weak front. The maximum temperature will be around 6 degrees C so it will still feel cold, especially in the shade. There should also be a light wind from the NNE which will make things feel colder.

In terms of race conditions, it's pretty close to ideal. Don't forget, if you feel a bit cold at the start line then that's fine. After a mile or two, you'll be warmed up and you really don't want to be wearing too much then.

It will probably be mild enough for say a short sleeve top if you are racing. A long sleeve top perhaps if your aim is just to get around. It would be best to forget about jackets and/or multiple layers.

As for the wind, it's likely to be from the north-north east and light. As it's coming overland as opposed to coming in from the sea, it should be modest enough in Dungarvan. Out on the course, it's likely to be a headwind between miles 2 and 3 and between miles 8 and 10 but I'd expect it won't be a major factor.

As for the course, it is the same as last year. The preview can be seen  here...

In terms of Cork clubs, these are the ones with 25 or more entrees....
