End of the road for the Ballycotton 10 and the Summer Series
Ballycotton Running Promotions have announced that the Ballycotton 10 mile road race and the Ballycotton Summer Series is coming to an end.
This will no doubt come as a shock to many in the local running community as these races were hugely popular with many runners.
The full statement is below...
STATEMENT FROM BALLYCOTTON RUNNING PROMOTIONS
(Issued at 17.00 on 05/10/2017)
It is with regret and no doubt a certain amount of sadness that we wish to announce that the Ballycotton ‘10’, the Summer 5-Mile Series and other events organised by Ballycotton Running Promotions have come to an end.
Whilst this will be received with shock and surprise by the running community at large, the decision to call a halt to our promotions is something that has occupied the thoughts of our committee for the past year or more.
Seven months ago we celebrated the 40th running of the Ballycotton ‘10’ and the symbolic date of Sunday March 12th – the exact date of the original race – may have given an indication of our intentions from this time of last year.
At a special and well-attended meeting in Ballycotton last night and after a long discussion the decision was unanimously agreed that our races should come to an end forthwith - on our own terms and before circumstances outside our control dictated so.
For anyone familiar with the geographical locations of our races, the problems logistically of organising the events are all too apparent. Parking has been one of our major worries. It may come as a surprise to many that, for the past two years due to weather conditions, the possibility of the Ballycotton ‘10’ having to be cancelled was a live issue up to 24 hours before the race.
With new proposed traffic regulations on the way, the staging of an event with up to 3,000 runners in a village with just one road in and out would prove insurmountable. These problems, to a lesser extent, are also evident in the summer races where we are again at the mercy of the weather as regards parking and facilities.
Unlike other such races which are organised by athletic clubs and the like who have a huge supply of members to call on, we are just a small promoting group. But for the assistance we have received from outside bodies over the years it would have been impossible to put on five major events each year.
Due to busy lifestyles nowadays, help is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain. Unfortunately, the age profile of the voluntary committee members and those willing to give of their time is a lot higher than it was when we started out. Also, some participants today are more demanding than in the past and it goes without saying that social media now plays a major role in those demands.
Since our first race, we have had a simple 100% ethos and aim which was manifested in all our races – to provide a well-organised, value for money event for runners of all abilities. Even though we are slow to sing our own praises, we can proudly say we have played a defining role in the popularity and promotion of running events so evident today.
Road racing in general is now certainly in a far better place than it was back in 1977 when 34 runners took part in our first five-mile race, just one of four road races in total held in the Cork region that summer.
Since that August evening four decades ago, 40 Ballycotton ‘10’ races, 156 Summer 5-Mile races, 60 Shanagarry ‘5K’ (summer and winter) events along with over 80 smaller local races from our early days have taken place.
Each of those road races had a definite start and finish line. Now, the finish line has finally been reached for Ballycotton Running Promotions and its events. It has been a long and winding road, a road filled with many memories and stories, and a road that has enriched the lives of thousands from far and near.
We conclude by expressing a deep-felt sense of gratitude to all those who have journeyed with us along that road, in whatever capacity, over the forty years of Ballycotton races.

Ballycotton Summer Series : A Personal Journey
Thursday the 27th of August 1992. That was the date of my very first Ballycotton 5 mile road race. At the finish line, I saw someone handing out some plaques and I duly found out that they were for people who ran all four races in the Ballycotton Summer Series. I remember looking at someone's plaque and seeing names like 'Ballyandreen' and 'Churchtown South' and thinking 'Where in the name of God are they?' :o))
I made up my mind there and then that I'd do the Summer Series the next year.
So I went back in 1993 and completed the series. And the next year, and the next one and so on. Fast forward to the Ballycotton 5 of 2017, my 101st Ballycotton Summer Series race and my 25th plaque for 25 years in a row.
In 1994, I managed to get into the top 50 for the coveted Summer Series t-shirt. I managed to stay there as far as 2013 for 20 years in a row. After that, auld age (and a lack of training ;o) caught up with me.
Truth be told, it's not really any major physical challenge to complete the 100 races. The hard part was just getting to the start line and avoiding holidays and injuries.
Over the last 25 years, some things have obviously changed a lot and still some things haven't.
Back in 1992 & 1993, there was no Facebook, blogs or websites. I'm not even sure if there was email back then or at least if I had it. It was really a case of turning up at a race and picking up a flyer to find out about the next one. You didn't get to see the results until maybe a week or two later when John Walshe would be wandering around at the next race handing out printed copies.
Some things haven't changed much though. John Walshe and Ballycotton Running Promotions still organise the races in much the same way as they did back then. The courses are exactly the same, the same low entry fee and the same emphasis on putting on a quality road race.
How long will I continue? Not for another 25 years anyway that's for sure! :o)) I always knew the 100 mark was coming up at some stage in the future but it was only just before the Ballycotton 5m race that I realised I had passed it in Churchtown South. If I missed a race now, it wouldn't be the end of the world. After all, no streak can keep going forever. I guess though for me and for a lot of other local runners, the Ballycotton Summer Series is the highlight of the Summer season of road races. Long may it continue to be so.

Results & photos of the Ballyandreen 5 mile road race...Thurs 25th May 2017
A total of 616 runners took part in this years Ballyandreen 5 mile road race, the first of four in the Ballycotton Summer Series. While the numbers are down just six on last year, it was still the 3rd highest ever.
The thing about the Ballycotton Summer Series is that is it a very good bellwether for what the local race scene is like. Since 2012, the numbers for Ballyandreen have been up around the 600 mark and it's still as strong as ever. If the numbers at other races are dropping, it's because there are too many many events.

Notice...Ballyandreen 5 mile road race - Thurs 25th May 2017
The Ballycotton 5 mile Summer Series starts at 8pm on Thursday evening with the Ballyandreen 5 mile road race in East Cork. This is the first of the 4 races in the series and there is a special plaque for anyone who goes on to complete all 4 races. In addition, there are Top finisher T-shirts for the top 50 men and top 30 women in the series when it concludes in August.
Location / Getting there......this piece is for the new runners. Ballyandreen is located a few kms to the west of Ballycotton. If you don't know that area then follow these directions...
Take the main road to Ballycotton in East Cork. It is well signposted from Midleton. Just as you enter the village, you will see an old church on your right....
Take the right here and drive up the hill. Keep going for about 2 kms and you will get to a crossroads where you will be directed to a parking area by the race stewards. It's very simple, you can't get lost.
Entry.......
1) The entry fee is €5. Try and bring the exact amount as it helps speed things up.
2) If you are new, they will need a few details from you like your age, club or area where you live, etc.
3) The location for entries is in a small yard just off the road. Depending on which field they use for parking, this can be 300-600 metres from the parking area.
Time.......The thing about Ballyandreen is that things are spread out a bit. Depending on which field they use on the night, parking can be 300-600 metres from the registration point and it's about another 200 metres down to the start line.
The best option and the one that would really help the organisers would be to arrive early....say before 7pm. You have loads of time then to wander down to enter...head back up to your car.....get changed.....and then head down to the start line.
Where people get caught every year is that they arrive at say 7:20-7:30......it takes about 8 minutes to walk down to the registration point.......big queue.......then they are in a mad rush to get back up to the car, get changed and get back down to the start on time.
So get there early or if you can't help arriving late, then get changed beforehand and jog down to the registration with the €5 entry fee in your hand.
Course...........The start point is near the registration point. The initial half mile has a good bit of uphill running it with a downhill section near the 1 mile mark. After that it's not too bad although there is a very steep downhill section near the 2 mile mark, almost too steep to really run on properly. Then it's out onto the main road and head west towards the 3 mile mark. The 4th mile is without doubt the hardest. There is a bit of a drag just after the 3 mile mark but you are soon running downhill again.
However, just after 3.5 miles, you take a sharp left and the 'Beast of Ballyandreen' welcomes you!!
It basically is a 500 metre slog up a tough 'little' hill. You'll be glad to see the 4 mile mark because after that, the last mile is a complete contrast. After an initial flat stage, you soon start running downhill, through the crossroads, past where the race started and all the ways towards the finish near the coast for what will probably be your fastest mile.
Overall........A 5 mile road race in the quiet countryside of East Cork. If the term classic applies, then this is it.
Additional info from the organisers....
BALLYANDREEN ‘5’ – Thursday night
Entry fee is €5 and people can collect their number when they enter which will facilitate both runners and organisers as it is expected to be extremely busy on race night.
We will be taking entries on Wednesday evening at Market Green in Midleton from 6pm to 7.30pm.
On Thursday evening, entries will be taken as usual in Ballyandreen from 6pm onwards and once again runners are urged to arrive as early as possible. Also, if possible, to have the correct fee (€5) which helps to speed things up.
Parking will be in the usual farmers’ field which will be signposted. As cattle will be using this field in the days after the race, we would ask that people don’t leave any rubbish (water bottles, etc) when they leave. For the same reason, we would appreciate if other events would not distribute flyers on car windscreens as they can also be a nuisance to collect afterwards.

Results & photos of the Ballycotton 5 mile road race...Thurs 25th Aug 2016
A total of 542 turned out for this years Ballycotton 5 mile road race, the 4th and final race in the Ballycotton Summer Series. It was also the 40th anniversary of the very first Ballycotton 5m which was held back in 1977. There can't be too many races in the country that have been going for so long.
One feature of the results this year is the drop in the number of faster runners. Just 30 runners broke the 30 minute barrier, the lowest since 2007 despite the fact that the overall numbers this year were the second highest ever.
It's a bit clearer in the chart above for those 143 runners breaking 35 mins. That's the lowest number since 2007 again.
As for the reason? It probably has to do with the fact that the average age of runners seems to be going up. This can be seen in the club stats in that there are now fewer and fewer U35's joining clubs.

Results & photos of the Churchtown South 5 mile road race...Thurs 28th July 2016
The annual Churchtown South 5 mile road race was held on Thursday the 28th of July in almost ideal conditions for running. A total of 532 runners took part in what was the third race of four in the Ballycotton Summer Series.
The numbers for 2016 were down just three on the 535 in 2016. I guess we all get a bit complacent about the numbers but getting 500+ runners for a 5 mile race in a small village in East Cork in the middle of the week is pretty special. I'm not sure if people realise just how big the race numbers are in Cork in comparison to other parts of the country. I put up a lot of results for other races on the Running in Munster site and there are races in or near Limerick City and Waterford City that get just over 100 runners.
The chart above shows a breakdown of the various paces and what is remarkable this year is that only 22 runners broke 30 minutes i.e. ran faster than 6 minute per mile pace. Since the race started in 1980, that is the lowest number ever.

Notice...Ballyandreen 5 mile road race - Thurs 26th May 2016
The Ballycotton 5 mile Summer Series starts at 8pm on Thursday evening with the Ballyandreen 5 mile road race in East Cork.
Entries for Thursday night’s Ballyandreen ‘5’ mile road race will be taken in Market Green Shopping Centre, Midleton, (same place as the recent Midleton race) on tomorrow (Wednesday) night from 6pm to 7.30pm.
Entry fee is €5 and people can collect their number when they enter which will facilitate both runners and organisers as it is expected to be extremely busy on race night.

In basic terms, the number 50 finisher was five minutes slower than last year. For the women, it got slightly harder. Sub 25 min times in the Ballyandreen 5 mile...
In the Ballyandreen 5 mile road race last week, the winner Michael Harty broke the 25 minute barrier with a finishing time of 24:59. This was the first time since 2001 that someone has run sub 5 minute miles.
One thing about the courses in the Ballycotton Summer Series is that they haven't changed since they started. Runners today are starting and finishing in the same spots as they did years ago. As a result, we can compare times from the past to now.
As you can see from the chart above, the 25 minute barrier was broken on a regular basis before.
John Walshe of Ballycotton sent on the following info...
"Michael Harty became only the third runner to break 25 minutes for the Ballyandreen course over the past 20 years. The others were Shaun Tobin (Swansea Harriers) who ran 24:54 in 1998, and Martin McCarthy (Leevale) and William Harty (KCK) who had respective times of 24:43 and 24:48 in 2001.
However, it’s worth noting that Liam O’Brien won the race for 15 consecutive years (1981-1995), breaking 25 minutes on 14 occasions including a course record of 24:00 in 1994 when aged 39. The following year he set an M40 record when winning in 25:15."

Results & photos of the Ballyandreen 5 mile road race...Thurs 28th May 2015
A total of 564 runners turned out for this years Ballyandreen 5 mile road race, the first race of four in the Ballycotton Summer Series. As you can see from the chart below, that is a drop from last years numbers although still well up on a few years ago.
Considering that the weather was dry, there might be two reasons for the drop.
1) It possibly might be a sign of the sheer volume of races on a moment. This week alone, there was the John Buckley 5k on Tuesday, a trail race in Currabinny on Wednesday, the Ballyandreen 5 mile on Thursday and there will be a 5k in Doneraile on Friday.
2) The Cork City Marathon, Half-Marathon & Relay is on next Monday and a lot of people may be saving themselves for that.

2 26:24 MCGRATH, Sean East Cork AC M 05:16.7
