Preview of the Bandon 5 mile road race - Sun 28th Dec (2pm)
The race...This year, the sign on for this race IS NOT in the Bandon GAA grounds. Entries are taken at the Old Still pub near the Mart which is over near the finish line. Assuming that you are coming from Cork, look for signposts left before you get to the 1st roundabout on the main road into the town. See the X on the map below.

The course...The start is about half a mile away near the top of the relief road. Just follow the other runners to the start. The start and 1st mile is mostly downhill or flat. Then you run through the town until you turn left and go past the GAA club. Here the hard work starts. There is a good climb after the 2 mile mark until you turn off left. Nothing too serious but enough to make you go into oxygen debt if you push too hard. Once you turn off, you are on some nice quiet country roads until the finish. So, overall, it is probably not the fastest of courses but it's not too bad. Just remember to keep something in the tank for the 2nd half after the long hill at 2 miles.

If you want to have a closer look at the course, I have put it up on the MapMyRun website. The link is HERE.
You will find a race flyer HERE.
Results of the Belgooly 4 Mile Road Race - Fri 26th Dec 2008
Last year, they got just over 500 runners for this race and that was a record entry. This year, the number of entries exceeded all expectations as 640 entrants turned out on the day. That is a huge entry for a 4 mile race and as the entry fee was €10, a substanial amount must have been collected for charity.

Results.....The full results are now out. See the end of this post. Here are the category results thanks to John Walshe of Ballycotton Running Promotions.

Preview of the Belgooly 4 mile road race - Fri 26th Dec 2008 (12 noon)
There is always a big turn out at this race every year. As well as the usual faces, there are plenty of people from other sports as well who do this race as a traditional run and may not do another race all year. Last year, they got about 500 runners and if the weather is ok this year, I'd expect them to get much the same again.

Directions and Sign-On...Belgooly is pretty easy to get to. From Cork, take the airport road South and head for Kinsale. Belgooly is on the way. Once you enter the village, you need to go past the church and then take the right at the only crossroads. Down about 200 metres on the left, you will see the GAA grounds and the sign-on is in there (see X on the map above).

Course description...The start is just on the Kinsale side of the crossroads in the middle of Belgooly. You run back towards Cork, through the village and up the hill past the church. For the first 2 miles, you are on the main road. It's a road you would never do normally as it is way too busy but with so many runners on the road, the cars have no option but to slow down. Just after the 2 mile mark, you take a sharp left and you are now onto quiet country roads. There are some drags along this section though. Nothing too serious but some hills are steep enough to put you into oxygen debt if you push too hard. At about 3.6 miles, you rejoin the main road again and you have a straight run into the finish just outside the church.

So, overall...It's not the fastest of course's so don't expect any fantastic times. But this race is one that most people seem to use as their traditional Christmas run, with most of the regular runners in Cork taking part. The entry fee is €10 but €5 of this goes to charity.

Some additonal information is available on the Belgooly AC website.

GOAL charity mile - Thurs 25th of Dec 2008 (morning)
The traditional GOAL mile takes place on Christmas Day, the 25th of December at various locations throughout the country. Most of them are during the morning time. You just turn up, make a donation to GOAL and run your mile. At the one in Cork City, there are several 1 mile runs and you can go as fast or as slow as you want to. In the county of Cork, it takes place at 6 different locations.

Cork City....The GOAL mile takes place at the CIT track in Bishopstown. Start times between 10am and 12:30pm. They will have lanes 1&2 open especially for the event and the mile is extremely accurate.

Doneraile Forest Park, North Cork...This is a really nice location. It's an old country estate with lots of paths and mature trees. A great place for running or just go for a ramble around afterwards. The guy's in Mallow AC are behind this one and they have a link up on the MapMyRun website showing the mile course, see HERE. Start times from 10am to 11:30am.
Ballydesmond, NW Cork...Meet in Church Grounds. 11am - 12 noon Bantry, West Cork...The Square.

Ballynoe, Fermoy...Ballynoe, St Catherine's GAA, 11am to 12.30pm.

Youghal, East Cork...Tower Park, 11am to 12 noon.

Bantry, West Cork....The Square, 1:45pm.

For other locations outside Cork or to get more information, see the GOAL website.

Results of the Newmarket to Kanturk 5 Mile Road Race - Sun 21st Dec 2008
The last time this race was held was on a hot Summer afternoon in July 2007 when it attracted 102 runners. The decision to move it back to near Christmas would appear to have been the correct one as this time they got 190 entries, a huge increase. The race certainly seemed to have lived up to it's reputation as a 'fast course' with the first 32 runners breaking the 30 minute mark.

Photos.....Paudie Birmingham has a set of photos of the race up on his photo gallery website. You can see them HERE and they show the area near the finish line in Kanturk. If you would like higher resolution copies, send me an e-mail and I'll pass on your mail on to Paudie (my e-mail address is shown at the botton of the menu bar on the right).

Results.......These are the provisional results subject to correction.

Results of the Shanagarry Christmas 5km Road Race - Sat 20th Dec 2008
The numbers for this race dropped off a little this year returning to the more usual figure of around 60 entrants. Possibly the fact the Newmarket to Kanturk race was on the next day may have had something to do with it.

Preview of the Newmarket to Kanturk 5 Mile Road Race - Sun 21st Dec (1:30pm)
The last time this race was held was back in July 2007 so it has now moved back this year to it's more traditional spot around Christmas. It has a reputation of being one of the fastest 5 mile courses that there is with a slight fall of ground most of the way.

Getting there........The hardest part of the race is probably trying to find Newmarket!! The easiest route if you are coming from Cork City is probably to head towards Mallow and go left at the roundabout on the main road and head towards Killarney. Just look for signposts for the turn off right for Kanturk.

Once you get to Kanturk, you come to a main junction and the signpost for Newmarket is about as clear as mud! Don't take the left here! You need to go straight ahead. You pass a garage and you should pass the finish point of the race on your right. 5 miles later, you come to Newmarket.

Entries........Entries will be taken at Hourigans Bar , New Street. This is in the middle of the town. As you come into the town, go straight up a slight hill and take the next right. It's there on the left. Entries for the race cost €10.

Duhallow Athletic Club are holding their 5 mile Road Race on Sun. Dec. 21st , starting at 1.30 pm .This is a very fast course, possible the 2nd fastest 5 Mile route in Co.Cork after Kinsale. Prizes for 1st 10 Men and Women , 1st,2nd and 3rd, in all age categories . Fun Walk and juvenile events also. €5,000 in prizes . Official Starter : Connor Counihan, Cork Senior Football Manager. Contact Donie Shine 086 8149970 or Ger Murphy 029 60719 for more details. All Proceeds to St. Josephs Foundation, Charleville

The course record ( men ) is 22.57 Noel Berkley 2002 and the women's record is held by Michelle Scott 25.54 . Race starts at 1.30 and Walk will start at 1.00...Official starter will be Mr. Conor Counihan, manager of Cork Senior Football team.
Course.......You basically start in Newmarket, run the 5 miles to Kanturk and then the organisers provide a bus to take all runners back to Newmarket. Alternatively, you can go for a 5 mile warm down ;o)
As you can see from the map, there is a gentle downhill incline for most of the race. Should be a fast one.
For a closer look, the route is up on the MapMyRun website.

Preview of the Shanagarry Christmas 5km Road Race - Sat 20th Dec (2:30pm)
There are 2 races in Cork this weekend. On Saturday, there is the annual Shanagarry Christmas 5 km road race. On Sunday, there is the Newmarket to Kanturk 5 mile road race. First off, the preview of the Shanagarry race...

This race is usually a pretty low key event with only about 80 runners taking part. There are no big prizes or anything like that, it's just a very simple 5k race which is usually held every year on the weekend just before Christmas day. I have to admit that it is probably one of my favourite races in the year. I'm not sure why....maybe it's the small field, the quiet country roads, the scenic area, the tradition of it being a Christmas run or maybe it's just a combination of all of these.

Location...The race starts and finishes in the village of Shanagarry in East Cork. If you are not sure of where that it, it is on the road between Midleton and Ballycotton. See the top map. Cloyne and Ballycotton are shown for reference.

Course...See map below. You start in Shanagarry, just outside the Church (or just next to the finish line in the 5 mile race if you know where that is). You run back towards Cork, passing the garage and the road junction and after a pretty flat 1 km, you take a left. You are now onto real quiet country roads until you re-join the road to Ballycotton at about the 2.5 mile mark. Then it's left, back into Shanagarry, right past the garage and the 3 mile mark and the finish is in the little dip just outside the GAA club. Overall, the course is reasonably flat and there are no real hills to speak of.
If you want to have a closer look at the course, I have put the course up on the MapMyRun website. See
HERE.

A flyer for the race is available HERE.
Africa Direct Cork Harbour Charity Cycle - Sunday 4th Jan 2009
For anyone who is interested, there is a 25 mile charity cycle around Cork Harbour on the morning of Sunday, the 4th of January. The route is pretty flat and it's a nice cycle on a sunny morning.

I know it's not exactly running related but it's in a good cause ;o)

You can phone 021 4821229 for an entry and sponsorship card.

More information on the AfricaDirect website.

Preview of the Cork BHAA 'Cork Simon' 5 km christmas run in Mahon - Sat 13th Dec 2008 (11am)
This charity run was originally supposed to take place on the 13th of Dec at the Marina but had to be postponed for a week to a new venue.

Registration...This is in the Mahon Community centre, shown as a X on the map. It's very easy to find. If you are travelling down into Mahon on the Skehard road, just turn left at the church and the Community centre is in about 300 metres on the left. To get your bearings, click on this LINK. Use the + and - to zoom IN and OUT and try MAP and SATELLITE to get a clearer view.

Format....When you enter, you have to guess what your finishing time will be. Whoever finishes closest to their estimated time wins the race! Needless to say, no watches are allowed.........or MP3 players for that matter!!
Course...
It's the same as the ESB 5k race that took place here last February. It's a short run of few hundred metres down to the start. See the map above. The race starts along the road n the way down to Blackrock Castle. After a few hundred metres, you need to follow the stewards instructions and veer off right into the car park and accross it. Now you need to be careful. Just as you get onto the walkway, you need to take a very sharp right. It's not so easy when the runners are still bunched, running fast and then have to brake and change direction.

Once you get onto the walkway, you are on the nicest part of the route. You are running on a smooth tarmac surface along the water's edge with scenic views over the inner harbour. It's pretty straight and dead flat for the next 1.5 miles.
Just one word of caution here. This walkway is not closed off for the race. It is a very popular amenity with plenty of people out walking with their kid's and dog's. Just keep it in mind.
After the 2 mile mark, you are heading back past the large radio mast on your right. You run accross the weir, up a small ramp and then out and right onto another walkway. Here's the tough part. You need to run up and over the pedistrian bridge that goes over the South link road. It's probably a good 50 metres of uphill running and more than enough to leave you panting. The bridge is wide enough for about 2 people so if there are walkers there, runners will need to run in single file.
Once you run down the other side of the bridge, you have a flat and dead straight run into the finish. The thing to remember here is that the finish is just beyond the tunnel under the main road. Once you see it, you know you're almost there.

Apres Race...
That tunnel you just ran through was in fact under the Skehard road. To get back to the Community centre, just follow the road down and turn left at the church, a jog of about 1 km.

If you want a closer look at the course, I have put it up on the
MapMyRun website. I plotted the course in the SATELLITE view so it should be the more accurate option to look at.

Overall...
A flat and fast course with one blip. The sections by the water are scenic and the path surface is good. Just watch out for those walkers!..........and remember, no watches!!

New feature added to the blog......Amazon.co.uk bookstore
When I first started this blog back in late 2006, one of my main reasons for doing so was just to mess about with blogs.....see what they were about, adding new features and to see what could I do with them.
So on that theme, you may have noticed some banner adverts for Amazon.co.uk on the right hand side of this page. If you click on any of those links, they should take you to the Running in Cork bookstore on the Amazon website. I have selected a number of books there that I think may be of interest to people. If you know of any other good books, you might let me know.

Why Amazon?........Simply because it's the largest bookstore there is. I always use Amazon.co.uk which is the UK version of Amazon because it is fast and it's safe. I know that if I order any books, CD's or DVD's, I will get them a week later delivered to my door. With the hassle of traffic, parking and a limited choice, I gave up buying books and CD's in Cork City a long time ago.

Why now?....Mainly because it's nearly Christmas!!
If you are looking for a 'stocking filler' or more to the point, you want to give a hint to someone for a 'stocking filler' ;o), then you might consider something on the store.
If you are not sure about what to buy, you can can always select the Gift Certificate option. See the banner on the right hand side of this page.

Ballycotton 10 entries....Reminder!!
Just in case you need reminding!! For anyone who is 1) Not a member of a Running Club, 2) Did not do one of the Ballycotton Summer Series 5 mile road races or 3) Is not a foreign entrant........You really need to post your entry asap!!! Don't delay....don't wait...do it now.

Someone left a comment saying that they did not get their entry form after sending off a SAE in November. Anyone else have the same problem???
As a quick experiment, I have put up a poll on the right that will last for 1 week. Just click on the day that you got your SAE back in the post...Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday (If you still don't have it, you might wait until tomorrows post before voting).

Regardless of whether it got lost or not, go to the Ballycotton website and print out the form.

Some of the links on the Ballycotton website were broken earlier but are ok now. Read the entry conditions.

It won't be long before the 2,500 limit is reached.
